Day 1 Competition

Today the golf team started their quest for a gold medal! We played our first round and ended with a score of 60. Our score gets combined with Tuesday results and then we are divisioned for medal rounds on Wednesday. Our goal of a gold medal is still achieveable if we play better every day. We had a gorgeous day to enjoy golf with overcast clouds and very cool temperatures. Keith wanted to make sure I let everyone know I hit the ball in the water again and he made the recovery shot to save us! I keep telling him that is what a good partner is for.

As I took in the sites at the golf course something became very evident today. These athletes are supported by many wonderful families. The athletes and the families are enjoying the thrill that thier child, son, daughter, brother or sister is competing at National level. The challenge brings with it the stress you would see at any athletic event. Everyone wants to win but all the athletes understand the MOST important part is do their very best! A couple of weeks ago I heard Lou Holtz speak at a Vitae event. Lou made this point to the crowd and I think it applies to what is happening in Lincoln, Nebraska at these games. Lou said live by these 3 rules: 1. Always do what is right! 2. Do the best of your ability! 3. Show you care!

I can tell you from the coaches, to the volunteers, to the officials, to the fans, the athletes at these games are proving Lou Holtz that sportmanship at Special Olympics believes by his creed.

I hope you are enjoying the blog!

Have a GREAT day!

Gary
